Regrowth

Sorcery1 generic manaGreen mana

The original graveyard recovery spell, and the template every green "return a card" effect has been answering to since 1993. The design carries almost no friction: any card, no type restriction, no mana value cap, no exile clause, no life cost, no tempo tax beyond the sorcery speed and the two mana itself. Every later variant walked back exactly one parameter. Eternal Witness moved the effect onto a body, which made it loopable but restricted the return to a creature only. Reclaim put the card on top of the library instead of in hand. Noxious Revival reached into any graveyard at instant speed but charged life. Nature's Spiral narrowed the return to permanents. Each is a deliberate retreat from the Regrowth baseline, which simply hands back the unconditional answer: get the spell, cast it again. Green's ownership of graveyard recovery in the color pie traces directly to this card setting the precedent before the pie was formalized. It also shows early Magic pricing effects by gut feel rather than rate: two mana for unconditional, untyped recursion is a number no modern designer would write, and the card has been functionally reprinted under harsher terms ever since precisely because the original number was too generous to repeat.
