Quillspike

Creature — Beast2 generic manaBlack or Green mana

The whole card is a question about where -1/-1 counters come from, and what happens if you can manufacture them faster than they can kill anything. On a 1/1 body, paying a hybrid mana to strip a -1/-1 counter for a +3/+3 boost reads as a marginal combat trick. The wrinkle is that the ability never specifies how the counter got there or which of your creatures wears it, and persist creatures return from the graveyard with exactly one -1/-1 counter waiting. Pair Quillspike with a persist body you can sacrifice and re-kill, and the counter meant to keep persist honest becomes the fuel for a large pump, repeated as long as you can pay the hybrid mana each time until the loop produces lethal or whatever payoff sits at the end of it. Kitchen Finks is the canonical partner, dying and returning each cycle while its counter feeds the activation; that interaction is the only reason a 1/1 with a growth ability carries any reputation. The design is a quiet object lesson in how counter-based balancing can be inverted: the -1/-1 counter exists to cap recursion, and this card converts the limiter into the engine. Without that second gear, the activation stays honest, demanding both a counter to consume and mana for every use, so the card sits inert until the right partner lands beside it.
