Halving life is a fundamentally different kind of damage math than the flat point swings most equipment deal in. A connecting hit takes an opponent from 40 to 20, then 20 to 10, then 10 to 5: three swings to set up a kill that, in raw point terms, no sword can accelerate the same way. The deathtouch rider is what makes the math reliable rather than aspirational, but the mechanism is more pointed than "removes the incentive to block." Because the life-halving only fires on combat damage to a player, an opponent's correct line is to chump-block and eat the loss of a creature to stop the trigger cold. Deathtouch is the answer to that answer: any blocker dies regardless of its toughness, so trading a creature into the equipped attacker to deny the hit is a steeper and steeper price as the board thins. Eventually the defender runs out of bodies, and the percentage clock resumes. The rounding clause matters more than it reads, too. Rounded up means the effect never strands an opponent on an odd life total it cannot finish, so a player at 1 takes the hit and dies rather than floored on a number the halving can never reach. The cost structure points at which decks want it: a flat three to cast and three to equip is steep for an aggressive shell trying to curve out, but trivial for any deck whose plan is to land one hard-to-handle threat and turn it into a guillotine. It rewards the body, not the board.
