Cast, not resolve: the token appears the moment an instant or sorcery hits the stack, so a countered spell still leaves you an Elemental for the trouble. That distinction rewards throwing spells at problems rather than landing them cleanly, and it also means the trigger fires off anything with a cost you'd pay anyway. The scaling is the real lever here: anything below mana value five nets one 1/1 blue-and-red Elemental, but a spell at five or greater triples the payout to three at a stroke. That gradient nudges a spellslinger deck toward the top of its curve, since a single fat sorcery matches the output of three cantrips and demands nothing else of the turn. The trigger is narrow by construction: it counts instants and sorceries only, so mana rocks, enchantment payoffs, and any noncreature spell that isn't an instant or sorcery contribute exactly nothing. The reward is tuned to spell density, not board development. The 2/1 body is beside the point; nobody protects this for its combat math. Left alone across a couple of casting-heavy turns, the widening army of Elementals becomes the clock, and every token feeds whatever else in the deck scales with creature count. The ceiling lives entirely in the multiplier: expensive spells do triple duty, and the whole package quietly argues that fewer, bigger spells beat a stack of small ones.
