Prairie Stream

Land — Plains Island

The dual that inverts how taplands used to punish you. The old painless-but-slow duals came into play tapped no matter your board, taxing every early turn regardless of what you had already built. This one flips the condition: it enters untapped only once you already have a pair of basics down, so the tempo hit concentrates on the opening turns and evaporates the moment your land count fills out. That makes it a poor fit as a lone splash in a manabase full of nonbasic fixing, and a natural one in a deck grounded in Plains and Islands, where the requirement clears itself by the third land drop almost every game. The land types printed on its type line do as much work as the colors it taps for: it can be found by anything hunting for a Plains or an Island, and it registers for effects that count basic land types. The engineering is legible where it matters, at the moment you sketch the manabase rather than the moment you draw the card. Rather than charging life like a shockland or always arriving tapped like its slower ancestors, it prices its untapped turns in the shape of your land base. A manabase that has planned its early curve gets the untapped land; one that has not gets the tapped one.
