Pit Trap

Artifact2 generic mana

A defensive artifact built around a colorless promise: any deck, regardless of its mana base, can answer a ground attacker. The design pays for that universality with friction. The activation loads on mana, a tap, and the artifact itself sacrificed, so each Pit Trap is a single answer with a deliberately clumsy activation. The target is hard-fenced: only attacking creatures, and only those without flying, which keeps the card honest by tying it to the combat step rather than letting it function as open-ended removal. That second restriction is the real design lever. Because it can only fire on an attacking creature, you cannot use it proactively to clear a blocker or remove a threat before it commits; the opponent has to walk into it. The "can't be regenerated" clause closes the loop, ensuring the kill lands against the regenerating creatures that defined much of the era it was printed in. The result is a piece of artifact-based combat insurance from a time when colorless interaction was scarce and a deck splashing no white still wanted some way to say no to a fattie swinging in. It reads as a trap in the literal sense the name suggests: dormant, cheap to hold up, and worthless until an attacker steps onto it.
