Pincher Beetles

Creature — Insect2 generic manaGreen mana

A green beater whose entire identity lives in the trade-off between an aggressive front and a defensive keyword. Shroud on a 3/1 is a deliberately mismatched pairing: the body wants to attack, but the toughness of 1 means any chump block or stray ground stalemate trades it away, and shroud does nothing to protect it in combat. What shroud buys is immunity to targeted removal, which on a fragile, undersized attacker is a peculiar kind of insurance: the card dodges the burn spell or kill spell it was never the priority target for, while remaining vulnerable to the board wipe and the 2/2 blocker it actually fears. The reason this design reads as honest rather than broken is precisely that mismatch. A 3/1 dies to almost everything that isn't a spell, so handing it spell-proofing costs the designers very little; the keyword is a flavor flourish (an insect too quick to be pinned down) more than a strategic engine. It also cuts the other way: shroud means you can't pump it, save it, or pair it with your own targeted tricks to push damage through, so the body is locked into being exactly what it is. A clean early example of using a protective keyword as a balancing counterweight rather than an upside, on a creature whose stat line keeps the whole package fair.
