Card advantage that prints itself, paid for in increments small enough to ignore until you cannot. Black has always priced its draw in life: Night's Whisper takes the toll up front, Sign in Blood splits it across two cards, Greed makes each draw a discrete transaction. This one inverts the structure entirely. There is no decision after it resolves; the card advantage is automatic, recurring, and front-loaded onto every upkeep whether you want it or not. That last clause is the whole design. The life loss is not a cost you choose to pay but a clock that runs on you, which is exactly what makes the card playable at three mana: a draw engine you control completely would be undercosted, so the engine controls you instead. In a deck winning a long game, the lost life is rounding error against the cards drawn. In a deck losing the race, the same trigger becomes a liability you cannot switch off, accelerating your own death by one point a turn. That tension (the better your draw step, the closer the enchantment edges you toward the burn spell that finishes you) is why it has remained the reference point for repeatable black card draw for two decades. Every successor that came after had to answer the question this one posed: how much life is one card worth, every turn, forever?
