SorceryBlack manaBlack mana

The card-draw rate black has always been willing to sell at, with the life loss as the receipt. Two cards for two mana and two life is a clean expression of the color's central bargain: spend the resource only black is uniquely allowed to spend, and convert it directly into raw card flow. It sits a single pip away from Night's Whisper, which charges a generic mana plus one black; this version pushes the cost to double black, trading manabase flexibility for the heavier color commitment that marks a true mono-black draw spell. What that commitment buys back is a quiet wrinkle in the targeting clause: it reads "target player," not "you." Most of the time you point it at yourself, but the option to hand an opponent two cards while costing them two life turns it into a bargaining chip, a way to feed a deal-making table or to push a foe past a life total they cannot afford. The life cost is the entire balancing mechanism. It scales against you the longer a game runs and the lower your total drops, which is precisely the window black tends to live in, and it makes the card a poor topdeck under an aggressive clock. With a healthy total and an empty hand, those two life are nothing. That tension, refill freely when you are safe and pay dearly when you are not, is why a card this efficient has stayed printable across so many years.
