First strike on a flier is the design quietly doing two jobs at once. Evasion gets the damage through; first strike means that on the rare turn something with flying or reach does step in front, the 2/1 swings first and lives against anything with one toughness that lacks first strike. The body is built to dominate the air, not just patrol it: a defending two-toughness flier that tries to trade gets nicked for two and dies before it can answer. The 1 toughness is the honest cost of that aggression. It dies to almost any reach back and folds to the smallest burn, which leaves it as a clock that wants the game to end before the opponent assembles a real flying defense. Slow, durable fliers were the white aerial workhorses of its era; this one is tuned for tempo rather than attrition, trading staying power for the certainty that its damage arrives and arrives uncontested. Everything the card is worth happens in the combat step, and it is sized to push a board advantage into lethal range rather than to grind one out.
