Two effects that usually live in separate spells here share a single scaling variable. The X buys +1/+1 counters, and those same counters then set how much damage the creature deals to every other body on the table. Because the removal is gated by the survivor's power, you are paying twice for one number, which is what marks the departure from a straight X-damage sweeper or a Blasphemous Act. Aim it at an already-large body and X becomes gravy; aim it at a fresh one-drop and you are funding the entire kill from scratch. The chosen creature keeps its counters after the smoke clears, so your board thins to one much bigger threat while everyone else's empties: not a symmetrical wrath but an asymmetrical one, with your survivor pre-selected. The catch is that "each other creature" cuts across your own side too, meaning the counter-loaded target is your only guaranteed survivor, and overcommitting on your end feeds your own spell. Sorcery speed denies the instant-window blowout where you oversize a blocker mid-combat and erase the swing. What you are really buying is a toughness check: the sweep is only as large as the creature you can safely inflate, which turns the deckbuilding question into finding a single body worth pouring the X into rather than a wide board worth protecting.
