Annihilator on an Equipment is the design provocation here. The keyword lived almost entirely on colorless Eldrazi, where it was inseparable from the body it came stapled to: cast the giant, attack, watch the defending player's permanents fall. Bolting the effect to a piece of gear detaches it from any one creature and asks a different question, namely which of your bodies deserves to become a wrecking ball this turn. What makes the equip worth the tax is not the menace or deathtouch (those are the polish); it is the sacrifice payoff, which converts annihilator 1 from a one-sided board-thinning tool into a theft engine. Annihilator 1 forces the defending player to sacrifice a permanent of their choice when the equipped creature attacks, and the mace then punishes exactly that sacrifice: the sacrificed nontoken permanent comes to your side of the board unless the opponent pays three life to keep it away. Each ability feeds the other, so the same swing that shrinks an opponent's board grows yours, and every "of their choice" sacrifice becomes a fork between bleeding three life and handing over the permanent outright. It reframes annihilator not as inevitability but as a repeatable trade you get to run through any creature you can afford the equip cost on.
