The connect trigger is a self-selecting toolbox: the mill scales with damage dealt, but only legendary and enchantment cards get scooped out of the pile, and if you choose to take none, the whip-around clause hands over a +1/+1 counter instead. That fallback is the clever part of the design. A connect-mill ninja that only occasionally converts to card advantage would be a coin flip, so the counter turns the miss into a body upgrade, meaning every hit does something whether or not the mill finds a hit. The template rewards a build dense in legends and enchantments without punishing you for the games where your deck refuses to cooperate. Two mana, menace, and a 2/2 frame that grows on its own put this squarely in the small-evasive-ninja tradition, where the goal is to slip in for early damage and let a triggered ability do the heavy lifting rather than the combat itself. Narrowing to two card types is what keeps the effect from being a generic Ninjutsu-adjacent draw engine: it asks you to care about a specific slice of your deck, and it rewards you for stacking that slice deep. What looks like a modest evasive beater is really a build-around whose payoff tracks directly with how committed your list is to legends and enchantments.
