Nakaya Shade

The classic Shade pump rebuilt as a negotiation. Frozen Shade and its many descendants offered a clean deal: mana in, +1/+1 out, no questions asked. This one wraps each activation in a forced choice for the table. Spend the black mana and the boost happens only if nobody coughs up two generic; any player can pay to deny the growth, and when they do, both sides simply lose mana. Your is gone with no body to show for it, their is gone with no board to show for it, and you are back where you started minus resources on both sides of the table. That is the design knot the card ties: it weaponizes the Prophecy set's recurring "unless a player pays" template, turning a vanilla mana-sink into a slow auction where you set the bid and the opponent decides whether each increment is worth burning two mana to stop. The friction is real and symmetrical: a flush opponent can stall you indefinitely when the stakes are low, and the body starts at a fragile 1/1 with no evasion to make the growth pay off even when it lands. It is an experiment in pricing a pump ability as a back-and-forth rather than a fixed rate, and the answer the block landed on (let any player buy out each tick) is exactly why the template stayed a curiosity. A pump you can be taxed out of is a pump nobody fears.
