Built as a damage-with-strings creature in an era when green's one-drops were almost exclusively vanilla bodies, this snake attaches a tax-style rider to the damage it deals when the discipline barely existed. The shape is deliberately strange: the bite itself does nothing extra, but it plants a delayed clock that the defending player can buy off for a single generic mana, paid before they draw. That ransom clause is the design hinge. It converts a 1/1 swing into a recurring tempo tax, closer in feel to a Rishadan Port nick than to permanent land destruction: each unblocked hit forces the opponent to spend one mana off the top of their turn or lose a life, and the pressure compounds when multiple attacks connect across a game. The card sits in a small Arabian Nights family of poisonous and creeping-damage snakes that experimented with what a green one-mana creature could threaten beyond its stat line, before deathtouch and infect codified those answers into keywords. The optional-payment structure now reads as a relic: modern templating prefers triggered abilities that resolve cleanly, and the "unless they pay" language, which asks the controller to track an opponent's upkeep and draw step, has largely been retired from new design. What remains is a glimpse of pre-keyword green, when a snake's bite was spelled out longhand as a tempo tax rather than abbreviated to a single italicized word.
