Monumental Corruption

Sorcery3 generic manaBlack manaBlack mana

Black's Ancestral Recall clause has always come chained to a life cost, and the design tradition it draws from is a long one: draw seven, lose seven; draw and pay in symmetry. What this card does is untether the size of the draw from a fixed number and hand it to your board instead. X is the count of artifacts you control, so the same spell that refuels an artifact-heavy deck can be aimed across the table as a punisher, forcing an opponent to draw cards they cannot afford and bleed life for each one. The card is agnostic about which of those two jobs you want; "target player" is doing all the work, and the artifact count decides whether it is a windfall or an execution. That flexibility is bought with a stiff price: at five mana and double black it is not a cheap engine, and the effect is dead in a deck that runs no artifacts, so it demands you commit to the archetype before it pays anything back. The interesting design tension is that its two modes want slightly different builds, one greedy for card advantage and one leaning toward the life-loss kill, yet both funnel through the same requirement: put artifacts on the battlefield first. It is a payoff dressed as a draw spell, and the number that matters is never printed on the card.
