Instant-speed card draw has been priced at three-and-up for decades to keep raw refueling honest against tempo, and this spell prints as a four-drop to fit that convention. Convoke sidesteps the cost without touching the printed number: tap four creatures, at least one of them blue, and the whole thing zeroes out, refilling your hand off blockers that were sitting idle anyway. What makes the grafting clever is where the tension usually sits. Convoke most often rides offense-adjacent spells, where tapping a creature costs a potential attacker; the mechanic asks you to weigh drawing now against swinging now. Bolted onto pure card advantage, that trade-off dissolves. The parked bodies a go-wide deck keeps behind its board, holding for the right turn to commit, are exactly the resource convoke is happy to spend, and cashing them for two cards costs only a combat step the deck had no intention of taking yet. The design turns on that alignment: the same board that floods the table most cheaply is the one that pays the least to draw off it. Strip the creature count away and it collapses into a stiff four-mana Divination no tempo deck would touch, so the payoff only exists once the battlefield is dense enough to treat two cards as fair compensation for standing still.
