Because the counter step fires on the same trigger that gauges your largest creature, a board already over 5 power keeps inflating itself, dragging the rest of your creatures toward the 20-power finish line over successive turns. That makes it a self-fueling engine in fat-creature shells, but it also pins the win on keeping a single enormous body alive through a full rotation back to your upkeep: every removal spell, every bounce, every edict that shrinks your top end can knock the clock back down a rung. The ability rewards going wide and tall at once, since the counters care about how many creatures you control while the win cares about how big one of them gets.
