The asymmetry is the entire pitch. Gemhide Sliver hands the same tap-for-any-color ability to every Sliver on the battlefield, both players' included; this one keeps the grant to your side, which is what you actually want, because you are the one chaining five-color activations and there is no reason to fix an opponent's Sliver pile in the bargain. The grant carries no cost beyond the tap itself: no color restriction, no life payment, just summoning-sick Slivers that come online for fixing and ramp the moment they untap. A board of them turns "I have creatures" into "I have all five colors at instant speed," which collapses the distance between assembling a board and assembling the mana to fire off the tribe's color-hungry activated abilities. That is the engine a Sliver pile is built to run, and this is the piece that lets it run on schedule. The cost of all that fixing is structural: the entire mana base rests on a single 1/1 whose only relevant output is the grant it broadcasts, and a Sliver deck already overcommits to fragile bodies because its payoffs demand a wide board, so any sweeper does double duty, taking your mana and your threats in one pass. The card is not a payoff itself; it is the thing that lets every payoff resolve, which makes it both load-bearing and the obvious first thing to kill.
