Three engines braid through a single condition: lifegain. The first drain fires on any life gained this turn, feeding on the incidental lifelink and slow-drip payoffs Orzhov has always leaned into. The second trigger is the wrinkle worth studying, because it wants gain and loss in the same turn. Most life-matters payoffs care about one direction of the counter (up or down, not both in tandem); this one prices the whole cycle, asking you to swing the total higher and then lower inside a single turn to earn a flying Bat. The activated ability, one and a black plus two life to draw, supplies only the loss half: left alone at the end step, it makes no Bat. It needs an outside source of gain to close the loop, so the token never becomes a free clock. Once both halves are met, the payoffs stack on top of the cards you dug for: a point of drain and a 1/1 flier that pressures across the air while your other lifegain keeps the engine fed. That self-referential turn is the design idea. A resource you would normally spend down (your life total) becomes a machine that refills the board while it bleeds the table, converting your willingness to burn life into cards, creatures, and a clock at once.
