Looming Shade

The shade template in its cleanest form: a fragile body whose only ambition is to convert leftover black mana into raw size. The 1/1 frame is the design's whole argument. With nothing invested, this is a creature you ignore; with a full grip of Swamps, it is a finisher that scales linearly with your mana, no upper bound except the contents of your pool. The pump carries no timing restriction, so it activates at instant speed: hold mana, attack, and decide how big it needs to be only after blocks are declared, which turns combat math against the opponent. That mana-sink design fills a specific gap in a mono-black creature curve, the late-game payoff for a deck that floods on basics and wants somewhere to spend the surplus. The Shade is a recurring black archetype, and Looming Shade is its no-frills printing: no evasion, no protection, no extra rider, just the +1/+1 clause repeated as often as you can pay for it. The vulnerability is the flip side of the linearity: it dies to anything that kills a 1/1 in response to the pump, and the mana you sank evaporates with it. That tension (enormous when unanswered, free to remove when not) is what keeps a card with such a generous ceiling honest.
