How this card plays

7 reviews

The double-reanimation ceiling of mana value three is the constraint that decides where this lives, and the homes are aristocrats and blink, not voltron. Teysa Karlov wants it badly: every creature she returns is a death trigger waiting to be reused, and the targets she cares about (Skullclamp fodder, sacrifice pieces, the small hatebears) sit comfortably under the three ceiling. The Sneak line is real synergy with her, not a footnote, because Teysa decks already field evasive small bodies that go unblocked. Swing with one, pick it up during declare blockers, and cast the spell itself for 1 generic manaWhite mana while two more bodies land after the math is settled. Athreos, Shroud-Veiled wants it for the same reason, and Alesha, Who Smiles at Death can run it as a second reanimation angle, though Alesha's own ability already overlaps the role.

This is a Bracket 2-3 card. It is too slow and too narrow for cEDH, where white reanimation is not the engine anyone is building around, and it is more synergy-dependent than a Bracket 1 precon wants to thread. Expect a sub-$5 to $5-15 secondary price as a recent release, which puts it within reach of casual aristocrat builds at the $200-500 tier.

Inside that shell it is the 8th-or-later recursion piece, competing with Wake the Dead for the instant-speed ambush slot and losing on flexibility there. The compensation is the Sneak cost, which lets this fall to two mana inside a profitable attack rather than waiting for an end step. Against Sun Titan it is not a competitor: Sun Titan recurs every turn, and this is a single burst. The card is invisible in decks without small creatures worth returning, which is most green ramp, most spellslinger, and every voltron table at the pod.
