Affinity usually lives on the artifacts themselves or on aggressive artifacts-matter spells; grafting it onto a white removal instant is the wrinkle here. Five mana is a deliberately absurd sticker price for the effect, because the card assumes you are shaving it down: on a board flush with artifacts, the cost collapses toward one white mana while the spell still lands five damage. The counterweight to that discount is the target clause. It fires only at a creature already committed to combat, either attacking or blocking, which fences the spell out of proactive removal and into a reactive combat trick. You cannot point it at a mana dork on turn two or clear a planeswalker's blocker before the crackback; you wait for the creature to declare its intentions in the combat step, then blow it out mid-attack. That timing window is the discipline of the card: it suits a shell content to sit behind artifacts and punish attacks rather than one hunting for clean sorcery-speed answers. Five damage catches nearly anything an aggressive or midrange board sends across, and the affinity math means the more artifacts flooding the table, the closer the spell drifts to free. It is a combat-only removal spell built for one kind of board, and priced to be either unplayable or nearly free depending on how many artifacts sit in front of you.
