Counter doublers had always lived at the extremes: Doubling Season and its ilk cost heavily and multiply everything, from planeswalker loyalty to token creatures. This narrows the effect to a much tighter axis, adding one of each kind of counter rather than doubling, but attaches it to a three-mana body and a commander slot. The trade is deliberate. A three-mana enabler that can lead a deck reshapes the whole build around it: every proliferate spell, every +1/+1 counter aggro creature, every planeswalker tick, every experience or energy or oil counter on a creature or planeswalker you control or on yourself now compounds on turn three. The "plus one" wording is quietly consistent, since it fires on a single counter as readily as on a stack of them. Choose a Background lets it partner with a second commander that supplies the payoff, so the design assumes you will build the counter engine around it rather than hoping to draw an enabler. That is the real work here: it takes a proliferate or +1/+1 counter strategy that previously needed to survive to a heavy enchantment or artifact and lets it start warping the board the moment its commander resolves. The Gith flavor is incidental to the function; what the card represents is the counter-matters archetype getting a cheap, repeatable, deckbuilding-anchor version of an effect that used to demand a much larger mana commitment.
