Key to the City

Two abilities that look unrelated until you notice they're built to chain. The first turns a card you no longer want into evasion: tap, discard a dead draw, and a creature connects. The second is the payback, and the clever wrinkle is its trigger condition: it fires when the artifact becomes untapped, not when you activate it. Untap it during your untap step (the standard route, available only because you tapped it the turn before), and you may pay to draw. On its own, it settles into a fair, slightly clunky looter: spend the discard and the tap to make something unblockable, then spend two mana to refill, paying in cards and mana for what it gives back. The reason it shows up where it does is that the untap trigger doesn't care how the artifact came to be untapped, only that it transitioned from tapped to untapped. Any effect that untaps an already-tapped permanent (a Voltaic Key-style untapper, a Twiddle, any repeatable source of untapping your stuff) hands you a draw for , and the discard clause exists only to feed it tapped permanents on demand. The gap between the intended use (an unblockable enabler with a filtering cost) and the exploitable one (a tap-then-untap loop stapled to card advantage) is where the card lives. Note what doesn't qualify: a permanent that was already untapped never becomes untapped, and blinking it returns a fresh, untapped copy rather than triggering the rider.
