Karma

Enchantment2 generic manaWhite manaWhite mana

Color-hosing as blunt instrument: pick the enemy color's land subtype and bill the opponent for every copy, every upkeep, forever. White pays four mana once; the player with Swamps pays in damage that scales linearly off a resource they cannot easily unwind mid-game, and that imbalance is the whole pitch. This was a design philosophy that aged out fast, but the way it aged is not what you would guess. The card keys on the Swamp subtype, not the basic supertype, so dual lands and Triomes that carry Swamp (Watery Grave, the various black-inclusive nonbasics) get counted too. The population of relevant targets did not shrink so much as shift, and a black-splashing multicolor deck can find itself paying a clock it never expected to owe. The other constraint is built into the wording: the enchantment fires at the start of each player's upkeep, so a white deck that splashes black eats its own Swamp damage right alongside the opponent. That self-symmetry is what caps the rate, and it is why the whole color-hoser lineage (Lifeforce, Flashfires, Anarchy) faded as the punishment slot evolved toward conditional, targeted answers and away from blanket taxation. Karma comes from the era when the answer to mono-black was a four-mana enchantment that read like a threat letter.
