Isolated Chapel

Land

The compromise that solved a problem dual lands had been failing to solve cleanly for years. A true dual taps for two colors with no downside but breaks fixing entirely; a tapland fixes but costs tempo every time. This kind of land splits the difference by tying its untapped condition to a basic land type you already control: cast a turn-one play off a basic Plains or Swamp and the second land arrives ready to use, but draw it on an empty board and it enters tapped like any guildgate. The result is a fixer that rewards committing to its colors early and punishes greedy splashes, which is exactly the behavior a two-color deck wants from its manabase. The Plains-or-Swamp clause also matters mechanically beyond the literal: it keys off the basic land type, so any land carrying the Plains or Swamp subtype satisfies it, not just basics. That makes the cycle it belongs to quietly synergistic with shocklands and other dual-typed lands, since each one helps the others enter untapped. As a design template it has proven durable enough to outlast its original color pair: the same untapped-unless-you-control-a-basic-type framework has been reprinted across all ten color combinations and revived in later sets, the answer Wizards keeps returning to when a format needs fixing that costs something without costing everything.
