A Clue that scales with the board state instead of a flat one-shot: the number of suspect counters it enters with is a snapshot of the busiest battlefield at that moment, so the same artifact reads as a single card in an empty duel and a fat stack of draws in a wide multiplayer game. That variance is the entire design tension. The counters are not free draws, either; each one costs two mana and a tap to convert, which paces the card into a slow value engine rather than a burst refill, and the sacrifice mode gives you an escape valve to cash it out for a single card when you would rather not commit the artifact to a long grind. It sits at the intersection of two counter-based subthemes from its era, the Clue investigate mechanic and the suspect keyword, borrowing the visual language of both while functioning as neither: you never actually suspect a creature here, the counters just meter the draws. What it rewards is patience and a board that is crowded at the moment it enters, since the ceiling is set once at entry and never climbs. Built as an artifact that any deck can run, it asks the pilot to sequence it against a full board and then spend the following turns bleeding the counters off at a rate the game can afford.
