Indestructible Aura
Total damage prevention for a single point of white mana, at instant speed, with no rider and no catch. The rate marks it as an artifact of early design, before damage prevention had been stress-tested as a combat-trick currency: point Lightning Bolt at the protected creature and it accomplishes nothing; send a stacked-up double block into it and the creature survives untouched. But the generosity is more apparent than real, and that is the irony of the card. Prevention answers damage and nothing else. It cannot save the creature from a -X/-X effect, an exile, or a sacrifice edict, and it does not even neutralize a trampler the way the wide-open text implies: the attacker still assigns lethal damage to the blocker, with the excess trampling through to the player unhindered. This is precisely why white's prevention school eventually ceded ground to indestructibility and protection, mechanics that survive removal prevention can do nothing about. The instants that followed had to decide which slice of damage they covered, and most narrowed the effect in exchange for a rider that did something else: Shelter cantrips but guards against a single source; Sheltering Light scries instead of blanking the turn. This one, printed before the question of what prevention should buy you was being asked, blanks every point of damage that would touch its single target for a turn. Its breadth looks generous until you notice how little breadth was ever worth.
