Howling Mine

Artifact2 generic mana

The original symmetric card-draw engine, and the template against which every group-hug effect since has been priced. The design is almost confrontationally simple: pay two mana, accept that everyone draws more, and let the deckbuilder figure out how to break the symmetry. That asymmetry problem is the entire point. Solutions have come from every angle over the decades (forcing opponents to discard, taxing their extra draws, winning before the extra cards matter, or simply turning the Mine off on their upkeep with effects that tap it down), and each generation of designers has cited this card when calibrating the next iteration. Font of Mythos doubled the rate at a higher cost, Dictate of Kruphix added flash, Temple Bell moved the trigger to an activated ability, and so on; none rewrote the formula, they just adjusted the dials. What keeps the Mine in conversation is the untapped clause, a quiet piece of design discipline that turns the artifact into a board-state object rather than a pure enchantment-style passive. Because it can be tapped, locked down, or pressured, the card functions as a permanent that interacts with the rest of the battlefield, not just an inert draw engine. Three decades of group-hug builds, chaos decks, and Turbo Stasis prisons have all started from the same two-mana artifact.
