Red removal engineered as a punishment for one specific strategy: the back half is the whole design. The front is a serviceable two-damage burn spell, but the card lives in the clause that turns hand disruption into a trap. Against a deck leaning on forced discard, this stops being removal and becomes a deterrent: discard it and eat four damage to any target, including the discarder's face. It arrived in an era when black-based discard was a real pillar of competitive play, and it answers those decks at the structural level rather than card-for-card, taxing the act of disruption itself instead of replacing the resource lost. The result is a maindeckable hedge that does nothing extra against decks that never reach for your hand and turns vicious against the ones that do. The trigger is the discipline that keeps it honest: it keys off a spell or ability an opponent controls, not your own discard outlets, so you cannot loop it through a sacrifice engine or a rummaging effect of your own. You only get the four-damage mode handed to you by the opponent's choice to attack your hand. That asymmetry sets it apart from cards that reward you for self-discard; here the payoff is purely defensive, a way to make stripping your hand cost the stripper something real.
