Guardians of Oboro

Creature — Moonfolk Samurai2 generic manaBlue mana

Defender is usually a full stop: the creature blocks and never crosses the red zone. Here it is a conditional lock with a key hanging next to it. This 3/4 blocker can stay home and eat attackers, but its static ability rewrites the defender restriction for every modified creature you control, itself included. Hang an Equipment on it, drop an Aura, or land a counter, and it is suddenly a body that can swing; do the same across the board and a table of pump-target defenders becomes a functioning offense. The design elegance is that the payoff and the enabler share one card without splitting into two disconnected roles: the same creature that anchors the defense can join the attack the moment it carries any modification. The parenthetical spelling out what counts is doing real work, quietly folding three separate build-around axes (equip, enchant, grow) into one condition, so any of them unlocks a creature rather than requiring a specific flavor of buff. That makes the card a hub for a shell built on Auras and +1/+1 counters rather than on its own stats: the more you invest in modifications, the less the base body matters and the more the whole board becomes offense-capable in a single turn. It is a rare instance of defender used as a restriction to be unlocked rather than a permanent condition to be worked around.
