Growth-Chamber Guardian
Adapt was built as a counter mechanic with a built-in floor: the reminder text pays only when the creature has no +1/+1 counters, so you buy the counters once and lose the option the moment anything else grows the body. This design takes that one-shot ceiling and turns it into a card-draw engine. Spend , and Adapt 2 lands two counters on the 2/2, which is both a real stat boost and the fuse that lights the payoff: the counters-placed clause tutors up the next copy, revealing it and putting it into your hand. Every activation grows a blocker into a 4/4 and refills your grip with the same threat, a self-assembling chain that draws cards in the shape of creatures. The elegance is that adapt's own limitation gates the loop. A creature already carrying counters cannot adapt again, so each Guardian's own adapt fires the search once; to advance the engine you have to deploy the fresh copy onto a new, counter-free body. The trigger keys on any +1/+1 counter, though, not just adapt's, so outside sources (a proliferate effect, a counter-doubler, another card that hands out counters) can spring the same search without paying the adapt cost at all. It is a rare case of a mechanic's balancing clause being repurposed as the payoff rather than the tax, spinning a modest two-drop into a repeatable card-advantage spine.
