Gravedigger
Black has carried fair reanimation since the game's earliest days, and this is the full-retail, no-tricks version of it: a four-mana body that returns any creature card from your graveyard to your hand when it enters. The design is almost aggressively plain, and that plainness is the point. By attaching the recursion to a creature rather than a sorcery, the effect becomes repeatable in a way a one-shot spell never is: blinkable, recurrable, and itself a target for the next copy down the line. The trigger reads "may," so it never strands you when the graveyard is empty, and limiting it to creature cards is what holds the body to a 2/2: the recursion is broad enough to matter but narrow enough that it never returns a land, a noncreature artifact, or the bomb spell you would rather not pay full price to recast. This is a body plus a card of attrition, not unconditional advantage; you pay full cost to return the creature to hand and recast it rather than cheating it into play. The shape has been iterated on for over two decades (Raise Dead does the same recursion cheaper but leaves no body behind, Reassembling Skeleton folds the recursion into the creature itself, Sun Titan extends the idea into white on a far bigger frame), but this four-mana 2/2 remains the reference point: the baseline number a designer reaches for first to hand a deck a recursion engine without breaking anything.
