General Traag, Heart of Stone

Five mana for a tempo swing this large is the bargain TMT's medium speed lets you make. Bot Bashing Time clears a three-toughness creature for two; Traag clears a four-toughness creature for five and leaves a 4/3 trampler in the red zone, with the sacrifice tax doubling as a way to clear chump tokens, spent Food, or a Mechanized Ninja Cavalry that has outlived its hybrid usefulness. The pick band lands P1P2 to P1P4 in any red seat. Boros Equipment wants it as the late-game closer that breaks Bespoke Bō stalls; UR Artifacts treats it as the payoff that converts excess artifact density into a board sweep plus a threat; Mardu Food (the BG-adjacent sacrifice shell the Pizza tokens hint at, splashing red) values it lower than the other two because Food is the engine, not surplus fuel, and feeding Traag costs the lifegain plan a turn.

Maindeck in every base-red build. The two-step trigger is the part worth drafting around: the may on the sacrifice means a removal-light hand can still cast Traag as a vanilla 4/3 trampler at rate, and the second trigger targeting on resolution lets you chase a creature that flickers off a Disappear trigger or gets equipped mid-sequence. Stomped by the Foot is the cleanest answer the format prints, and it costs four; against a five-drop that already two-for-oned you, that is a bad trade for the black player. Take it over your second removal spell, not your first.

Red's artifact-sacrifice payoffs want a deck already sacrificing artifacts on purpose, which narrows the home considerably. The enters trigger fires once, when Traag lands: a single sacrifice converts into a single four-damage shot, aimed with full information after the artifact is gone. This is a build-with, not a build-around. Krenko, Mob Boss does not want it. The targets are decks already producing artifact tokens to feed.

Magda, Brazen Outlaw runs it for the one-time conversion of a spare treasure into removal plus a 4/3 trampler swinging into a softened board. Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer wants it more, because Slobad's whole pitch is feeding artifacts into recursion, and Traag is itself an artifact creature: clear a blocker on entry, then loop the body back to do it again. The single trigger is one-shot per cast, but Slobad turns "per cast" into "per recursion," which is where the value-engine framing actually earns its keep.

Bracket 2-3. The sorcery-speed entry and the sacrifice tax make it too slow for cEDH, and a precon shell rarely has the artifact density to make the trigger reliable. In any deck without a sacrifice subtheme it underperforms: no fodder, no removal, just a 4/3 trampler for five doing nothing it was built to do.

In Magda or Slobad lists it competes with Goblin Engineer and one-shot Shrapnel Blast effects for the "removal off artifacts" slot, and it wins when you also want a body. Goblin Engineer offers repeatable artifact recursion where Traag offers a single removal shot stapled to a creature; the lists that want a board presence take Traag, the lists that want a tutor-loop take Engineer, and Slobad happily runs both. Expect a sub-$5 secondary price. The bracket and the archetype gate this, not the budget.

A five-mana 4/3 that wants you to be a dedicated artifact deck, in a format where the dedicated artifact decks are already faster and meaner than this. The removal trigger needs an artifact to sacrifice, which means you are playing the rest of the package anyway, and at that point five mana for four damage on a sorcery-speed body is well off the rate Modern asks. Legal, but it has yet to register in tracked tournament play this season, and nothing about the board state suggests that changes. No archetype here is asking for it.

Legal since its March 2026 printing, but it has yet to register in any tracked Standard deck this season. The structural read explains the absence better than any single matchup would. Five mana for a 4/3 with trample is a body the format's aggressive decks have already priced out, and the four-damage removal mode is the part that should sell the card, except it taxes you another artifact to fire. Red sacrifice shells exist on the margins of Standard, but none of them have wanted to spend five mana and a permanent to kill one creature when cheaper removal does the same work without the setup. The tempo math works against it twice: you pay full freight for the body, then pay again for the swing, and the payoff is a single removal trigger that any two-mana instant matches. Without a dedicated artifact-sacrifice engine that wants Traag specifically as both fuel and outlet, the card is a removal spell that costs too much and a beater that arrives too late.

The artifact-creature type is the genuine hook, the part a future printing could build around: a recursion or reanimation package that treats Traag as a reusable removal trigger changes the calculus entirely. Nothing in the current pool does that work.

Traag rotates in 2027 with its parent block. Until then, the gap is structural, not seasonal, and no announced set gives the sacrifice shell the payoffs it would need to justify the rate. If a slower, more grindy artifact metagame emerges before rotation, the read is worth revisiting; on the current pool, it stays unregistered.

A five-mana removal-on-a-body for red artifact-sacrifice shells in Pioneer, the kind of deck that wants Shrapnel Blast effects attached to something that stays around. The problem is the rate: five mana, sorcery-speed, and you have to feed it an artifact for the four damage to fire at all. Pioneer's red removal slots already go to cheaper, unconditional answers, and the dedicated artifact-sac archetype it wants has not materialized in the format. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play. Goes in the budget version of a sacrifice brew if you are building one anyway.

A 5-mana 4/3 in a format where Black Lotus and the Moxen assemble a turn-one board and Ancestral Recall draws three for one. The sacrifice-and-burn line deals four to a creature, which is fine rate stapled to a fragile sorcery-speed body, and it pays Mental Misstep and Force of Will on the way in without doing anything the format's restricted removal does faster or cheaper. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play. Noise.

A five-mana 4/3 whose removal half is Lightning Bolt's damage at a higher number but a much worse rate: Bolt does three for one mana at instant speed with no fuel cost, Traag does four for five mana, sorcery speed, and an artifact you have to already control. The body lands into Force of Will on the way in, and a 4/3 for five does nothing the format's existing threats do not do for less. Legacy's red removal slot is settled at one mana, and the artifact-sacrifice shells that might want a creature this size are not begging for a five-drop. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play this season. Does not clear the bar.
