Phasing entered the game in this card's home set, and few designs ever leaned on the keyword for raw gambling the way this Efreet does. The activation costs nothing, which is both the joke and the trap: you can shield this flier from a removal spell, a damage sweeper, or a lethal block as many times as your nerve allows, but every attempt is a coin flip, and a loss sends it to the graveyard immediately. That free cost converts protection into a repeatable wager rather than a single guaranteed dodge. Most evasion of removal in Magic charges you mana or a card; this one charges you variance instead. The phasing clause does the heavy lifting cleanly: while phased out the permanent is treated as though it doesn't exist, so it slips past targeted spells and board wipes, then phases back in before your next untap step with no summoning sickness and no further cost. The bind is that you only need to win on the turns that matter, and you never know in advance which turns those are. It rewards reading the board to judge whether the gamble is worth taking, and punishes the reflex to flip every turn simply because the button is free. A 2/1 flier capable of killing itself on your own activation is an awkward thing to build a deck around, which keeps it filed under oddity rather than tool, a record of how far early phasing design was willing to push player risk.
