Foot Ninjas

WB Midrange is the seat, and the pick is upper-midrange: P1P4 to P1P6 in a format where the hybrid cost lets it splash from either base color. The Sneak math is what carries the card. At six mana the rate is mediocre, and the body invites a Stomped by the Foot or a Dimensional Exile on the same turn you sandbagged the hardcast. Sneak inverts that. You declare an unblocked attacker, pull it from combat before damage, and replace it with a tapped 5/5 swinging in for five, plus three life on the way down. The replacement attacker connects where the returned one would have, so you are trading a smaller hit for a much larger one and a life cushion in the same step. In medium-speed WB mirrors, that swing is the kind the loser rarely climbs back out of.

The returned-attacker clause reads as a cost but matches what the deck does anyway: an unblocked one-drop has already earned its keep, and an evasive flier you bounce can rebuy its own value later. The line worth assembling is any common Sneak or Ninja attacker already in your colors, because returning one mid-combat and replacing it with this is the kind of double-spend at four mana that WB usually cannot reach.

The punisher is Grounded for Life, which destroys a tapped creature for less and catches the Foot the turn it lands tapped and attacking. Against a white deck holding up two, take the hardcast line or have a follow-up ready. Maindeck in any WB build; the splash is live when your base is BG Food or RW Equipment and you can produce one hybrid pip.

Redundancy for white-black ninja and evasion lists that already run the better Sneak payoffs and want one more body to redeploy mid-combat. The Tier-1 read holds: bounce a connecting attacker, drop this in tapped and attacking, gain three to offset the tempo. In Commander the friction is finding the right unblocked attacker in the right combat with the mana up, and a singleton hundred-card deck rarely lines that up on demand. It earns a slot in a dedicated ninja-tribal build chasing density. Cut from white-black midrange that wants its six-drop to do more than this.

Sneak is a Ninjutsu rewrite, and the cleanest Modern home for a Sneak creature is the same place Ninjutsu lives: Dimir or Mardu Ninjas, where the unblocked-attacker trigger is the engine. The slot Foot Ninjas wants is the top-end ninja body, a role Fallen Shinobi owns as the payoff you bounce a connecting one-drop into. The axis is what you get for the trade. Fallen Shinobi steals two cards off the connect and ends games; Foot Ninjas gains three life and presents a 5/5. The life matters in the mirror and against Burn, but a 5/5 with no on-connect theft is doing far less work than the Shinobi it would replace, and the deck already runs that effect at the same combat step.

The second question is whether any white-black midrange shell wants it as a curve-topper outside the ninja engine, swinging on a creature and replaying the body tapped and attacking. No such deck holds a tracked seat in Modern right now; Orzhov midrange is not a fixture here, and the cards that anchor it in other formats do not assemble into a Modern list.

That leaves a downgrade in the deck built to abuse Sneak, and a card without a home in the deck it would theoretically slot into. It is legal but has yet to register in tracked tournament play this season. The lifegain is the only thing it does that Fallen Shinobi does not, and Modern's ninja decks are buying card advantage, not life.

A Sneak payoff for white-black aggro lists that already want a board of evasive one-drops to bounce on the turn the game tips. The three-life trigger keeps the tempo line from costing you the race, which is the only reason to consider it over a more direct top-end. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play this season, and that tracks: the deck that wants to un-attack to ambush has not shown up in Standard yet. Filler until a white-black tempo shell exists to host it.

Legal in Pioneer since this spring's set, and not yet registered in any tracked tournament list. That absence is not a timing accident waiting to resolve; it is a fit problem.

The Sneak cost wants a deck that builds a wide, attacking board and then has a reason to un-attack on the decisive turn, returning a connecting threat to drop a 5/5 in mid-combat. The closest white-black home in the format is the Greasefang-adjacent space, but those decks attack to crew a vehicle or fuel a reanimation loop, not to bounce their own creatures back for tempo. Boros Heroic and Mono-White Humans go wide, but neither plays the bounce-and-replace pattern Sneak rewards, and neither is in the market for a six-mana printed cost it would have to dilute its curve to fit. White-black midrange exists in pieces around Greasefang and the occasional Orzhov control build, but those decks are playing removal and grind, not a combat-step substitution engine.

The three-life trigger is the kind of incidental gain that reads as relevant on paper and disappears in practice, because no current Pioneer deck is paying four mana mid-combat for a body plus three life when it could be holding interaction. There is no slot competition to name here, because there is no slot. The archetype that would want a Sneak payoff, an aggressive Orzhov deck built to attack and then re-attack from a new angle, does not exist in the format's current map.

The Sneak cost is the only reason to read this card twice, and even then the math runs into Pauper's clock. Bouncing an unblocked attacker to drop a 5/5 into combat for four mana, already tapped and attacking, plus three life on entry, sounds like the kind of tempo swing white-black aggression wants. The problem is that white-black midrange is not a tracked Pauper archetype, and the format's aggressive seats already run cheaper, harder-hitting commons. A turn where you un-attack to reload asks for a board built around the line, and the decks that could host it (the white-based aggressive shells, MBC's heavier builds) have not found room.

The figures bear this out: it shows up in a thin scatter of lists this season, and when it does, it lands as a one- or two-of rather than a deck's plan. That is the band of a card people are testing, not a slot anyone has settled. The three-life sustainability angle reads better in theory than against Burn's actual clock, where a six-mana ceiling and a combat-step setup both arrive a turn or two late.

Under a tix on MTGO, and the price tells the same story the play data does. Pauper's life-gain-on-a-body slot at common is contested, and a six-mana printed cost with a conditional discount does not beat what those decks already run. The card needs an archetype that wants to bounce its own attackers; no current Pauper deck does.

A 6-mana 5/5 with a Sneak cost that bottoms out at four mana in a format where Black Lotus makes three on turn zero and Ancestral Recall draws three for one. The combat-step bounce trick asks you to build and protect an attacking board, which is not a plan the Power Nine equilibrium has ever rewarded. Legal, but yet to register in any tracked Vintage deck this season. Noise.

The Sneak cost brings this to four mana plus a returned attacker, which is the only version worth discussing, since a 5/5 for six with three life is below curve in a format where the most-played creatures arrive at one. But even the Sneak line is paying the Force of Will tax, and the bounce-an-attacker requirement makes it a combat-step play rather than a clean tempo swing. Legacy's white-black bodies start at Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and the Death and Taxes hatebears, all of which cost less and apply pressure without asking you to un-attack first. Nothing in the format wants a six-drop whose discount still leaves it slow and conditional. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play, and the structural read says it stays there. Does not clear the bar.
