Flashfires

Sorcery3 generic manaRed mana

Three words and four mana erase every Plains on the battlefield with no targeting clause and no exceptions. The card comes from a design era that treated color hosers as a balancing lever rather than a sideboard novelty, written for a world where players met at a kitchen table with mono-color decks and a red player facing a white deck deserved a button that read "you win." The effect is symmetrical on paper (it kills your Plains too), but a mono-red caster pays nothing for that clause, which is exactly the asymmetry the old design theory was banking on. Because it keys off the Plains land subtype rather than basicness, it is more thorough than its age suggests: anything with the Plains type goes, which sweeps up dual and shock lands like Tundra and Hallowed Fountain alongside the basics. It belongs to a loose family of single-color land nukes: Tsunami answers Islands at sorcery speed, while Boil does the same at instant speed, the timing difference that made Boil the more feared of the two. Modern design treats sweeping land destruction as a feel-bad lever to be pulled rarely and conditionally, which has demoted this card from menace to curiosity. The early designers' theory of color balance survives in it: not sideboard cards that shave percentages, but mono-color land destruction that ended games outright when the matchup tilted the wrong way.
