Fellwar Stone

Artifact2 generic mana

The color output here is parasitic: it produces only what your opponents' lands can, which makes it the rare piece of ramp that scales with the table rather than your own deckbuilding. The design is a clever sidestep of the era's two-color tension. Where most early fixing was a land or a heavier investment, this offered cheap, repeatable mana of colors you might not even be running, on the theory that whatever your opponent is playing is probably something you want access to. That dependency is also its discipline: against a single-color opponent it shrinks to a one-color rock, and in the early-game window before any opponent controls a land, it can briefly do nothing at all. The rate has aged remarkably well precisely because the constraint is invisible in any multicolor context, where opponents reliably supply the full spread of colors a fixing piece could ask for. What sets it apart is the axis it reads: it answers to the board state rather than your own list, a quietly elegant solution to color screw that asks you to trust your opponents to solve it for you.
