Fact or Fiction
The genius is in who makes the cut. Hand your opponent five cards and ask them to split the pile, and you have built a decision that punishes them no matter how they choose: an even split surrenders too much, a lopsided one gives you a clear best pile and dumps the rest into a graveyard that blue has always been happy to mine. The opponent is forced to assign value to your cards under your information, not theirs, and any split they pick is one you can live with. That is the design trick that has kept this around: card advantage that feels generous (you keep something, you bin something, you dig five deep) while quietly transferring the hard part of the choice to the person who least wants to make it. The graveyard half is not a cost so much as a second mode; flashback, delve, reanimation, and threshold all turn the discard pile into a resource, which means the "loser" pile is frequently the one you wanted in the first place. At instant speed, it slots into the end-step holding pattern blue control has run for decades, refilling on the opponent's turn with mana otherwise spent on counters. The effect has been reskinned many times since, but the original version sets the rate every imitation is measured against.
