Doubling the output of a single land name is the whole pitch, but the imprint clause anchors that payoff to a trigger most artifacts of its era never touched: it exiles a land by name, then rewards every land sharing that name, which is why this only ever made sense in decks running a deep stack of basics. Exile one Snow-Covered Swamp or one Mountain, and every copy you tap thereafter produces an extra mana of whatever it already made. The design tension lives in that "same name" hook. Run too many distinct lands and the lens powers nothing; run a wall of identical basics and it becomes a true mana multiplier, scaling with the slowest part of the deck. It is closer in spirit to a land-specific enchantment than to a generic mana rock, paying off concentration rather than fixing. The cost structure tells the same story: a flat investment that produces nothing on its own, recouped only once you have several matching lands already in play. That front-loaded, non-self-sustaining nature is what kept it honest. The mana it generates is "of any type that land produced," so it cannot fix colors you weren't already making; it only deepens the well you dug. Imprint as a keyword mostly cared about creature characteristics or spell types, so anchoring the trigger to land names was an unusual application, one that turned a draft-incidental mechanic into a build-around engine for the most monochromatic decks imaginable.
