Most painlands charge you life to cast spells faster; this one charges you life to slowly build a board it only hands over once it dies. Every tap does double duty: it fixes for black, and it banks a hatchling counter that becomes a flying 1/1 the moment the land reaches the graveyard. That converts a resource almost everyone treats as expendable into a delayed payoff, and it inverts the usual incentive around losing your lands. Ordinarily you protect your manabase; here the land wants to die once it is loaded, so effects that sacrifice or destroy it (a sacrifice outlet, an opponent's land destruction, a board wipe that takes noncreature permanents) all cash the counters into insects. The key restriction is that the trigger reads "put into a graveyard from the battlefield": bounce loses everything, since returning the land to hand strips every counter without making a single token, and blink is no better, since exiling and returning it wipes the counters just the same. The life cost is the other gate, metering how many counters you can stack before the math turns against you. It sits in a small lineage of lands that reward their own destruction, but where those tend to fire a single fixed effect, this one scales, tying the swarm's size to how many points of life you were willing to spend loading it. The count the game reads off the dying land is the whole trick: worth more dead than most lands are alive, provided you bled to make it so.
