Ertai, the Corrupted

Once a clean-cut Dominarian wizard, here he is rebuilt in the Phyrexian image, and the redesign rewrote what his counterspell costs. The Esper colors signal a control piece, but the engine runs on attrition: every counter feeds on a creature or enchantment you already control, turning the board into ammunition. That fuel clause is what keeps a repeatable, untap-gated counterspell from being oppressive. You can fire it again and again, but only as fast as you can rebuild a body or an aura to throw on the pile. The design reads as a deliberate marriage of two color philosophies that rarely share a slot: blue's reactive permission and black's willingness to spend life, creatures, and material to get what it wants. The result asks you to value your permanents as resources rather than threats, the same conversion logic that powers a sacrifice deck, but pointed at the stack instead of at an opponent's face. It rewards a board built to be eaten: token producers, recurring creatures, enchantments you don't mind feeding back into the machine. The white in the cost is almost vestigial to the ability itself, present more to mark the three-color identity than to do work, which is fitting for a card whose whole character is about what blue and black do when they stop drawing lines between hand, board, and graveyard.
