Elvish Ranger

Creature — Elf Ranger2 generic manaGreen mana

A vanilla green creature built entirely around the glass-cannon ratio: four power on a body that dies to any point of damage. The 4/1 is one of the oldest expressions of the idea that green can buy raw attacking power by selling toughness wholesale, a stat distribution that maximizes offense-per-mana while leaving the creature legal prey for every burn spell, ping, and chump-and-trade in the game. This body hits hard the turn it untaps and rarely survives a second combat, which is the whole bargain: you are paying for the swing, not the staying power. It carries the Elf subtype, but the design predates the tribe becoming a mechanical engine, so the type line reads as flavor rather than a payoff hook; none of the lord effects, mana acceleration, or token synergies that later Elf cards would key off were on the table when this was printed. The unadorned shape is the giveaway about its origins: no abilities to track, no triggers to misplay, just a single number to point at the opponent, the deliberate simplicity of a card meant for an audience learning what attacking even costs. What remains is a clean, honest piece of early green aggression, the sort of unconditional beater that filled out a curve before green had access to efficient evasion or pump that could protect such a fragile frame.
