Lifegain has always struggled to become a threat rather than a cushion; the incidental life you bank while grinding out a game rarely translates into pressure on the opponent. This design converts that accumulated life total into a scaling clock. The 4/4 body is the floor, but the moment your life climbs above where you started, it grows and gains menace, and once you are ten past your starting total, it swings well beyond the size of most blockers that could stand in front of it. The elegance is that this is a static condition, not a triggered payoff: nothing needs to enter, resolve, or be sacrificed, so the card rewards you continuously for a resource lifegain decks were already generating and treating as inert. Lifelink is the engine that feeds the requirement, so each connection partly powers the next threshold. The protection package is where it gets pointed: hexproof from instants specifically slams the door on the flash-speed removal an opponent reaches for in response to a lethal attack, while leaving sorcery-speed answers and board wipes room to keep it fair. That narrow carve-out is the balancing decision. It cannot be targeted by an instant at the last second, but it is not untouchable, so the tension lands on whether the opponent has an answer ready before combat rather than during it.
