Vesuva was the template: a land that enters as a copy of any land in play, priced at coming into play tapped. This one shifts the eye from the battlefield to the graveyard, and that relocation is the whole design. Instead of duplicating what an opponent already has online, it reaches into what has died: a fetchland that already cracked, a dual that got Wastelanded, a utility land some removal spell answered. The graveyard is a richer menu than the battlefield in any game that has run long, and the card feeds on that accumulation rather than the current board state. The Cave rider pays for the flexibility going forward: the copy is always a Cave in addition to whatever it names, folding it into Cave-count synergies without stripping the identity it borrowed. The enters-tapped clause lives inside the optional copy effect, so declining the copy leaves you with an untapped land producing colorless: a humble floor the design is willing to accept. The ceiling is a land that enters as the single best land any player has lost, chosen with full information after the fact. That retrospective quality (you pick knowing exactly what the game turned out to need, not guessing at the outset) is what pushes it past a straight Vesuva reprint, and it rewards the kind of manabase attrition that most long games generate on their own.
