Desolate Mire

Land

A land that enters untapped and produces two colors at no up-front cost is a premium the game rations carefully, so this one buys that convenience back with a recurring surcharge: pay one, get two, net one colored mana on balance. That tax is doing all the balancing work. What the generic mana actually punishes is treating this as your primary source (every color you pull off it is mana you spent a mana to reach), while it barely inconveniences the deck that only needs to correct its colors once or twice a game. It belongs to a long line of pay-to-filter duals that swap the up-front tempo hit of a tapland for a repeated one, and that structure ages well precisely because it never gates a turn: the fixing is available the instant you want it, at a cost you feel but can always afford. The design also sorts decks cleanly. It reads worse in shells that flood the board with cheap spells, where every activation stacks against a tight curve, and better in slower decks that spend mana in larger, less frequent chunks, where paying to filter is a rounding error against the mana they were going to bank anyway.
