Deflecting Swat

Instant2 generic manaRed mana

The redirection half is old technology, the same misdirection Ricochet and Bolt Bend have always sold: catch a removal spell or a game-winning trigger and point it somewhere better, most memorably back at its caster. What reframes this one is the price, or rather the absence of one. If you control a commander, the mana cost simply falls away, which turns a reactive spell into free interaction that costs you nothing but the card. That single conditional rewires how the card sits in a game: you no longer hold up three mana and telegraph the answer, so the redirect can come from a tapped-out board, threatening every targeted spell your opponents want to resolve. This is the design bargain a whole cycle of commander-cares instants runs on, trading a color-appropriate effect against the format's central object, and it is why the effect had to stay modest. A hard counter for free would warp everything; a redirect asks the opponent to have made a mistake worth punishing, or forces them to play around a spell that may not exist. The cost reduction is a format concession baked into the card itself, and absent a commander it reverts to a stiffly priced piece of misdirection. With one on the battlefield, the card expresses cleanly the idea that a commander is not just a threat but a resource the deck is allowed to spend on tempo.
