The whole Merfolk counter-aggro plan runs on the wager this card makes: that the counters it scatters will outpace the damage you take playing a 1/1 in the early turns. Each Merfolk that follows it down triggers a counter, and crucially the target is flexible: pile them onto an evasive threat to close fast, or onto this very creature to turn the engine into the beater. That flexibility is where it pulls ahead of a static anthem. An anthem grows the whole board evenly and predictably; this lets you concentrate growth where it matters, building a single must-answer threat or hedging across the team depending on what the opponent has shown. The fragility is what you pay for the engine. A 1/1 with a build-around trigger is a removal magnet, and a single point of burn or a chump-block trade ends the snowball before it starts. That tension defines how the card plays: it is at its best when it resolves and survives a turn into a board that is already developing, and at its worst as the lone two-drop staring down a clean answer. Among the counter-matters Merfolk that gave the tribe a second axis beyond pure tempo, this is the one that turns each subsequent creature into compounding pressure rather than a flat body, which is the difference between a wide board and a board that snowballs.
