Darkslick Shores

Land

The fast-land template solves a problem the original dual cycles could not: a land that comes in untapped early, when you need the color most, and accepts the tap-cost penalty only after your manabase has filled out. The condition keys on your land count, so it arrives untapped through the first few turns and slows to tapped once you have committed a fourth land, exactly inverting the curve where the tax hurts. That is the whole pitch and it is a sharp one, because an aggressive Dimir deck is making its mana commitments early and is happy to play a tapped land in the late game when it is sitting on surplus lands anyway. The trade-off is honest in a way the painlands and the original duals were not: instead of a fixed cost (a point of life, a basic-type tax on fetching), the cost is conditional on board state, and a controlling deck that wants this land for the back half of the game pays it most often. It produces blue and black with no life loss and no shock, which is the part that keeps it relevant against decks that punish life payments. The design has held up well enough that the cycle has been reprinted repeatedly, each refresh slotting into whatever two-color manabase wants speed over insurance.
